  • Prepare for Shearing Day

    1. Pen your animals ahead of time. When they see a stranger roll up to the farm, they will be suspicious and much harder to catch.

    2. Provide a power source within 50’ of the shearing area. I carry 50’ of extension cords.

    3. Fast your animals; no food or water for 12 hours. This is for the safety and comfort of your animals and their shearer! Being sheared on a full stomach makes them less comfortable and more likely to fight (and injure) me.

    4. Keep your animals dry. If rain is in the forecast, bring them inside or reschedule your appointment with at least 48 hours notice. Shearing wet animals can cause illness to your shearer.

    5. Set up a shearing area with good lighting and a flat surface, such as a piece of plywood. If you plan to use the wool, have bags ready for collecting fiber and a broom to keep the shearing surface clean.

    6. Shearing day is a good opportunity to deworm and vaccinate while your animals are already penned. I can hold your animals while you administer medications; for liability reasons, I do NOT administer any medications.
